Kelsey Matthews: Growing Up with an Addicted Parent and Finding Hope

Rather than just being sitting in it right and being immersed in it and wallowing in it right and feeling sorry for myself, I took all of those negative feelings and I started to put it into something productive that was able to help other people.
Imagine growing up in a household where addiction casts a shadow over every aspect of life. That's the reality Kelsey Matthews faced, and in this episode of the Landmark Recovery Podcast, she opens up about her journey. Kelsey, who holds the title of Miss Nevada Volunteer 2022 and works as a community engagement coordinator for the CARE Coalition, joins host Michael Walsh to share her deeply personal story.
As a child of an addicted parent, Kelsey experienced the chaos and trauma that addiction can bring to a family. She recounts her mother's struggle with addiction and the isolation she felt growing up. It wasn't until after her mother's death that Kelsey fully understood the extent of her mother's addiction and its impact on her own life. She wrote a heartfelt letter to her mother on the Odyssey platform, which resonated with many others who had similar experiences.
This response ignited her passion for advocacy, leading her to work with the CARE Coalition in Nevada. Kelsey discusses the importance of education and support for those battling addiction and their families. She emphasizes that breaking the silence around addiction is crucial for healing and recovery. Her advocacy work also highlights the need for collective action, involving elected officials and individuals with diverse skills.
Throughout the episode, Kelsey candidly shares her challenges in recovery, including managing her health issues while advocating for others. She also touches on the role of social media in advocacy, noting its potential as both a powerful tool and a double-edged sword. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact addiction has on families and the transformative power of speaking out and seeking support.
Kelsey's story is one of resilience, compassion, and hope, offering inspiration to those affected by addiction and encouraging them to take action within their communities.
