Healing Through Art: New Roots Recovery Center's Unique Approach to Addiction

The arts is definitely a great way to teach people how to relax, how to cope and how to spend their time.
Imagine finding peace and purpose through a paintbrush or a musical note. That's exactly what's happening at New Roots Recovery Center in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In this episode of the Battling Opioids Podcast, Kellie Pierce, a certified recovery specialist, shares how the center is using alternative treatments like art and music therapy to help individuals on their recovery journey. Pierce explains that these creative therapies aren't just add-ons; they're core components of the recovery process.
'We actively designed a program that would bring that right to our center, and it was amazing', she says. The arts offer a powerful way to relax, cope, and channel emotions, especially crucial in early recovery when time can feel like an enemy. Through activities like music meditation and healing through music, participants find new ways to focus their energy and express their feelings. But that's not all. New Roots also emphasizes the importance of peer support.
The center is run by individuals with lived experiences of addiction, creating a unique peer-to-peer dynamic that goes beyond traditional counselor-client relationships. This approach adds an extra layer of support, significantly boosting the chances of long-term recovery. And there's more on the horizon. New Roots plans to introduce yoga classes, including mindful meditation yoga, trauma-informed yoga, and hatha yoga. These sessions aim to align the mind, body, and spirit, helping individuals feel good about themselves as they work towards recovery.
