The best choice I have ever made for myself was sobriety. Yeah. And just like you said, it's connection, you know, being in recovery and having friends that are in recovery, having, you know, colleagues that that, you know, want to want to stick by you and help you through this, you know.
Barbara James, a Red Seal Carpenter and advocate for Indigenous people, has been sober since November 18, 2018. In this episode, she opens up about her path to recovery and how reconnecting with her Indigenous roots has been a cornerstone of her healing. Barbara's story is one of resilience and transformation. Growing up amidst intergenerational trauma, her family history was marred by abuse and substance misuse.
She recounts a pivotal moment when she was pulled over for drunk driving, an event that filled her with shame and propelled her toward change. Through Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and therapy, Barbara began to heal from the deep-seated trauma and abuse she had endured in past relationships. Rediscovering her Indigenous culture and spirituality played a crucial role in her recovery journey.
Despite enduring significant losses in 2020 and 2021, including the deaths of family members and her beloved dog, Barbara stayed committed to her sobriety. Her faith, cultural connection, and pursuit of education and a career in carpentry have been instrumental in her personal growth. Barbara emphasizes the importance of breaking the cycle of generational trauma through connection, sobriety, and self-awareness. Her dedication to teaching Indigenous youth and women building skills reflects her commitment to incorporating cultural values into her work.
This episode is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact of cultural rediscovery on the healing process.
