Ryen Aavurauq Richards: Embracing Culture and Healing in Recovery
If I can remain hollow bones and get out of my own way, then I can live in my purpose, I can live in my truth and I could live, you know, like my ancestors did.
Meet Ryen Aavurauq Richards, a single mom and master Reiki practitioner, who shares her powerful journey of recovery on The Anonymous Eskimo Podcast. Born in Qikiktagruk (Kotzebue) and raised in the Matsu Valley, Ryen faced her share of challenges, including abusive relationships and addiction. But her story is one of hope and resilience. Ryen has been free from drugs since 2017 and has celebrated a year of sobriety from alcohol.
Her path to recovery is deeply intertwined with her Iñupiaq heritage and practices like self-reiki, which have helped her find purpose and live authentically. Now, as a Traditional Peer Support specialist, she co-facilitates peer support classes at UAA, offering guidance to others on their own recovery journeys. Tune in to hear how embracing indigenous culture and healing practices can lead to profound transformation.
