Nicholai Joekay: Finding Strength and Sobriety in Yup'ik Culture

At that moment, when she said that this photo of myself during one of our spring floods, you know, here on the kuskokwim, I was in the village and we were outside my grandparents' house and I was standing on this log that was perched up on an old three-wheeler, and I had my favorite jacket on. And so becoming okay with forgiving myself in these situations was very healing.
Imagine growing up in a small village where alcohol is scarce, yet its impact is deeply felt. That's the backdrop for Nicholai Joekay's journey to sobriety, shared on The Anonymous Eskimo Podcast. Host Ralph Sara sits down with Nicholai, a Yup'ik man who has proudly maintained two years of sobriety, to discuss his path to recovery and the pivotal moments that led him there.
Nicholai opens up about the struggles he faced with addiction and how he found his way to the Ayuquciaq Healing Center in Bethel, Alaska. Through mindfulness practices and what he calls 'healthy selfishness', Nicholai managed to turn his life around. But it wasn't just about the techniques; it was also about reconnecting with his Yup'ik roots.
Nicholai explains how his culture played a crucial role in his healing process, providing a sense of identity and community that was essential for his recovery. He also shares the importance of self-forgiveness and how creating a vision board helped him stay focused on his goals. Beyond his personal journey, Nicholai talks about his role as a foster parent, adding another layer of purpose and responsibility to his life.
His story is a powerful reminder that recovery is not just about abstaining from substances but also about rebuilding one's life with intention and support. Tune in to hear Nicholai's inspiring story and learn how he turned his struggles into strengths.
