Alisha Crossley: Turning Trauma into Triumph
Looking back on my inability to control the impulses, the binge eating, you know, looking at the binge eating, I never could. And lets me know now what tools I need to look for to prevent things like that from happening.
Picture this: at just 18 months old, Alisha Crossley's life was shattered when her father shot her mother six times. Miraculously, her mother survived, but the family was forever scarred. Alisha's father, who struggled with ADHD and cocaine addiction, later took his own life when she was only six. Growing up amidst such turmoil, Alisha faced her own battles with anxiety, depression, and undiagnosed ADHD.
Moving out at 14 to forge her own path, she found herself grappling with mental health challenges and panic attacks that often went unnoticed because her symptoms didn't fit the typical mold. Fast forward to college, where Alisha majored in English but hit a 'Quarter Life Crisis' at 27. She turned to binge drinking, binge eating, and other self-destructive behaviors.
It was during this tumultuous period that she delved into her family's history and discovered a legacy of addiction on her mother's side. To cope, she relied on caffeine pills and Modafinil, unaware that her struggles with focus were linked to inherited ADHD. In this episode of 'Knockin' Doorz Down', hosted by Jason LaChance, Alisha opens up about her journey through the darkness. She shares how therapy, medication, and self-care became her lifelines.
Her story is a testament to the power of vulnerability and breaking toxic cycles. Alisha's candid discussion about substance abuse and binge eating reveals how these were coping mechanisms for her deep-seated pain and trauma. Listeners will be moved by Alisha's resilience and her dedication to creating a meaningful life. Today, she runs a successful photography business and continues to heal and grow.
Her story is a beacon of hope for anyone facing similar struggles, proving that no matter how dark the past, the future can still be bright. Tune in to hear Alisha's powerful narrative and find inspiration in her unwavering spirit.
