Gendered Alcohol Marketing: Insights with Dr. Amanda Atkinson

Our research is an esrc-funded project, so the economic and social research council funded that and it's been a Two-Year project where we've actually spent a lot of time looking at the way brands promote themselves online, how they target and represent women, as well as nightlife venues.
Have you ever noticed how alcohol ads seem to play on gender stereotypes? In this episode of the Alcohol Alert Podcast, Dr. Amanda Atkinson from Liverpool John Moores University dives into the murky world of gendered alcohol marketing. With two years of research under her belt, Dr. Atkinson reveals how brands specifically target women, often using harmful stereotypes that do more damage than similar tactics in other industries. Curious about how these marketing strategies influence women's drinking habits?
Or why the current self-regulatory system might not be enough to protect consumers? This episode covers it all. From discussing the empowerment narrative often used in alcohol ads to examining alcohol's role in issues like sexual harassment and assault, Dr. Atkinson offers a comprehensive look at the societal impacts of these marketing strategies. She also shares her thoughts on what she would change if she had control over the UK's alcohol marketing regulations.
For anyone interested in the intersection of gender, marketing, and public health, this episode is a must-listen.
