Brian Cuban: From Addiction's Grip to Advocacy and Healing
I want people to know, figure out who your compassionate community is and take advantage of that, because maybe you're projecting and if you don't have one, create one.
Brian Cuban, the younger brother of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, has a story that will resonate with anyone touched by addiction. As an attorney, best-selling author, and recovery advocate, Brian’s journey through addiction and into recovery is both harrowing and inspiring. His battle with alcohol and cocaine addiction began in college and stretched for nearly 15 years, deeply rooted in the bullying and fat-shaming he endured during his youth.
This led to body image issues and a self-deprecating sense of humor as a coping mechanism. Brian’s addiction was so severe that he found himself using cocaine at work, even once at a federal courthouse in Dallas. But his story doesn’t end there.
For nearly 15 years, Brian has been in recovery, and he has chronicled his experiences in two best-selling books: 'Shattered Image: My Triumph Over Body Dysmorphic Disorder' and 'The Addicted Lawyer, Tales of the Bar, Booze, Blow & Redemption'. In this episode of 'Addiction Talk', Brian opens up about his struggles with addiction, mental health conditions, and his journey towards helping others in their recovery.
He emphasizes the critical role of family support and creating a compassionate community, especially within the legal profession where addiction is often stigmatized. Through his candid storytelling, Brian aims to break the stigma and shame surrounding addiction, offering hope and inspiration to those battling similar demons.
