Esther E.'s Southern Journey: Finding Hope and Sobriety in AA

To me, aa is within the reach of every alcoholic because it can be achieved in any walk of life and because the achievement is not ours but god's.
Imagine being in Texas in 1941, struggling with the weight of alcoholism and stumbling upon a lifeline in the form of a magazine article. That's exactly what happened to Esther E., whose story is beautifully narrated by Howard L. in this episode of the Big Book Podcast. Esther's journey to sobriety began after reading about Alcoholics Anonymous in the Saturday Evening Post. Feeling a glimmer of hope, she reached out to AA’s General Service Office in New York.
A week later, she received not just literature but also a heartfelt handwritten letter from Ruth Hock, the non-alcoholic secretary at the GSO. This personal touch was the spark Esther needed to believe that AA could work for her. Over her 19 years of sobriety, Esther didn't just stop at saving herself; she became a cornerstone in the AA community. Her service work was instrumental in establishing AA groups in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, New Orleans, and San Antonio.
One of her peers even remarked that Esther was the catalyst that made AA work in those early days. As Howard L. reads her story, listeners are transported back to a time when AA was still finding its footing, and they get to witness the profound impact one person can have on a community.
Whether you're new to AA or a seasoned member, Esther's story is a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of reaching out for help and supporting others on their journey to sobriety.
