Navigating BPD: A Family Member's Journey with Nicole Taylor
I think the other thing that we learned that was really helpful was the perspective. And like, we can be annoying, don't get me wrong, like, I'm fully aware that when I am in a space that is negative, like I am ruminating on that and I can't get out of it, and like, that is super annoying, because I mean for me, that's why dbt was so important in the groups- was because I was able to see somebody else doing that and be like: oh my god, this is what I'm like when I'm like that.
What does it take to support a loved one with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)? In this heartfelt episode of 'Bold Beautiful Borderline', hosts Laurie Edmundson and Sara Amundson sit down with Nicole Taylor, the Founder and Executive Director of EmotionsBC. Nicole offers a unique perspective as a family member of someone with BPD, sharing her experiences, challenges, and the skills she has learned along the way.
Her journey began five years ago when her family member was diagnosed with BPD, thrusting her into a world where information and support were scarce. Nicole candidly discusses the importance of learning communication skills, particularly Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which have been beneficial not only for her loved one but for herself and other family members. She emphasizes how these skills have enhanced their relationships and connection. The conversation also touches on the significance of self-care for family members.
Nicole shares how crucial it is to maintain one's own mental health while supporting someone with BPD, especially when emotions run high. She found solace and perspective in being part of a supportive community, which helped her recognize her own behavioral patterns and cope better. Advocacy for mental health is another key topic in this episode.
Nicole highlights the differences in mental health advocacy between the US and Canada and underscores the need for more peer support for both individuals with mental health challenges and their families. EmotionsBC, her organization, aims to provide this much-needed support. The episode wraps up with a powerful message about finding hope and community support. Laurie and Sara remind listeners that perfection isn't the goal; rather, it's about doing your best and taking care of yourself along the way.
This episode is a raw and honest discussion that offers invaluable insights into the realities of living with BPD from a family member's perspective.
