Carlita Victoria's Mission: Equitable Mental Health Care for BIPOC Communities

It has been very difficult to even turn on the news sometimes to watch black people be defamed for all these for various reasons, to watch case after case after case in The United States, where we feel like black people are being told we just don't matter, that our lives are just not important- that becomes, I mean, and then have to have to wake up The Next Day, go to work with the majority of white people who, it seems like, are very unaware that anything has just happened in the world, that that impacted us so heavily.
Carlita Victoria is a force to be reckoned with in the realm of mental health advocacy. In this episode of 'Ruthless Compassion with Dr. Marcia Sirota', Carlita opens up about her journey to make mental health care more accessible and equitable for the BIPOC community. Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and with a background in dance performance and choreography, Carlita has always been attuned to the pressures that can weigh on mental well-being.
However, it was her realization of the stigma surrounding mental health in the Black community that spurred her into action. Carlita founded Darkness RISING Nonprofit, an organization dedicated to providing mental health resources and creating safe spaces for the Black community. She talks candidly about the unique challenges faced by BIPOC individuals, including the scarcity of culturally competent therapists and the frequent misdiagnoses that occur due to a lack of understanding.
Carlita’s mission is to ensure that mental health care providers are equipped to address these specific needs. Throughout the episode, Carlita shares poignant stories of Black individuals who have struggled to find appropriate care and the impact of racism on mental health. She recounts her own experiences of being fetishized for her Black culture and the emotional toll it takes.
Her organization offers support groups, therapy sessions, and workshops tailored to the needs of the BIPOC community, striving to make people feel seen, heard, and safe. Carlita’s passion for breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is palpable. She emphasizes that feeling supported and knowing you are not alone can make a world of difference.
This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the intersection of race and mental health, and for those looking to support equitable mental health care.
