Mark Freeman: Tackling Mental Health Stigma Head-On
We have to change how the system functions, because even one of the things like there's huge we're having, not just when we look at a mental illness epidemic in North America. It depends on the college, but like within The Last Year, within The Last Six Years, whatever. So I'm going to create something to fill those gaps. And I think then we'll start to see stigma change when mental health is more about hey, like by taking care of it I'm taking care of my health, like I'm building something valuable and then it becomes transformative.
Imagine seeing stigma as a pesky squirrel that needs to be chased away. That's the unique perspective Mark Freeman brings to his conversation with Stephen Hays on the 'Stigma Podcast - Mental Health'. Mark, an author, mental health coach, and workshop facilitator, opens up about his own battles with addiction, anxiety, and OCD.
He doesn't just stop at sharing his story; he dives into the broader issues within the mental health care system that perpetuate stigma and make getting help harder than it should be. Mark's approach is refreshingly proactive. He believes mental health should be treated like physical health—no diagnosis needed to seek help. Think of it like getting a gym membership to stay fit; why shouldn't mental health care be the same?
This episode is packed with practical advice and thought-provoking ideas about how we can all contribute to a more supportive and less stigmatized mental health landscape. One of the standout moments is when Mark talks about the power of community in recovery. He emphasizes that finding a supportive network can make all the difference.
Whether you're dealing with mental health challenges yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable steps for fostering a healthier, stigma-free environment. Tune in to hear how Mark Freeman is not just surviving but thriving and helping others do the same.
