Finding Strength in Togetherness: Michael Stoller's Inter-Faith Experience
As the service ended, my rabbi invited all the clergy who were in attendance to come up to the Bimah. Each of the clergy got a candle, the lights were dimmed and my rabbi led the clergy to a prayer, and it was really a touching and beautiful moment.
Have you ever felt the profound impact of coming together with others during a time of sorrow? Michael Stoller certainly did. In this episode of 'Blueprints for Emotional Sobriety', he shares his heartfelt experience attending an Inter-Faith Shabbat Service at Etz Chaim Congregation in Lombard, Illinois. This service was held to honor the victims of a tragic synagogue shooting, and it left a lasting impression on Michael.
He talks about the initial feelings of despair and hopelessness that weighed on him as he walked into the service. However, what unfolded was a powerful testament to the strength and healing that can come from community solidarity. Michael recounts the moving speeches, particularly one from a pastor of an evangelical Christian church, whose sincere apology and respect for the Jewish community brought tears to his eyes.
By the end of the service, Michael felt a renewed sense of hope and a deep appreciation for the healing power of faith and community. He reflects on how moments like these can help us overcome anger and despair, urging listeners to embrace kindness, compassion, and love in their own lives. This episode is a touching reminder of the importance of coming together and supporting one another through difficult times.
