Tommy Figlioli: From Brooklyn Beginnings to Addiction and Recovery

I didn't know I had that when I was a kid. But when I had that first drink I noticed I was able to talk to a girl that I was afraid to talk to the day before I was able to feel comfortable around people that I was uncomfortable around The Day Before. I liked that feeling and I always wanted that feeling once that first drink went in me. I started drinking that day and I never stopped.
Tommy Figlioli's journey starts in the bustling streets of 1980s Brooklyn, where a young boy's desire to fit in led him down a path he never expected. In this episode of Recovery Survey, Tommy opens up about his early years, where a single bad choice for acceptance spiraled into a lifelong battle with addiction. His story is both a cautionary tale and a beacon of hope for those facing similar struggles.
Tommy’s early life was marked by his attempts to gain respect from his peers, using alcohol as a crutch to become the person he always wanted to be. This newfound courage, however, came at a steep price. As Tommy's drinking escalated, his promising academic career and relationships began to crumble. He landed a scholarship to Pace University, but his hard-partying ways soon overshadowed his achievements. When life in Pleasantville became unbearable, Tommy returned to Brooklyn, hoping for a fresh start.
Instead, his situation worsened. He lost a promising career in finance and found himself in a psych unit due to his alcohol and cocaine use. The cycle of addiction seemed unbreakable, pushing him to darker places and more destructive behaviors. Thoughts of ending it all began to seem like the only escape. But Tommy's story doesn't end there. With the unwavering support of his family and friends, he embarked on a journey to recovery.
Through the 12-step program and the guidance of a dedicated sponsor, Tommy clawed his way back from the brink. Today, he stands as a testament to the power of resilience and the possibility of redemption. Now an author and speaker, Tommy shares his experiences to inspire others who are battling addiction and mental health issues. His story serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how deep one falls, recovery is always within reach with the right support and determination.
