Recovery High Schools: Lifelines for Teens Battling Addiction

The research that we've done has suggested that if someone has gotten alcohol and drug treatment and been able to go on to recovery high school, there's a positive impact across just about every category you can think of compared to not going into a recovery high school.
Imagine being a teenager grappling with addiction and trying to stay sober in a typical high school environment. It's a daunting challenge, but recovery schools offer a beacon of hope. In this episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, host Duane Osterlind sits down with Michael Durchslag and Andy Finch, two champions of recovery high schools, to discuss their transformative impact on young lives.
Michael leads PEASE Academy in Minneapolis, where students not only receive a high school education but also have access to licensed alcohol and drug counselors throughout the day. They participate in weekly sobriety support groups and benefit from a peer support team led by teachers. Andy, an academic researcher at Vanderbilt University and co-founder of the Association of Recovery Schools, shares his extensive knowledge on the subject.
Recovery schools have been around since the late 1970s, but their numbers have surged in the past two decades. Currently, there are 45 such schools in the US, each providing a supportive and sober environment for students in recovery from substance use disorders. The research is compelling: students who attend recovery high schools show better academic outcomes, fewer relapses, and higher graduation rates compared to their peers in traditional schools.
One of the key advantages of recovery schools is the sense of community they foster. Students are surrounded by peers who understand their struggles, which can be incredibly empowering. However, starting a recovery school is no small feat. It often requires significant advocacy and effort from families and concerned individuals who want more for their children. The role of families in supporting young people through this journey is crucial.
Transferring a child to a recovery school can be a tough decision, but the benefits are clear. By addressing addiction early and providing a nurturing environment, these schools set students on a path to long-term recovery and success. Tune in to hear more about how recovery schools are changing lives and offering new hope for teens battling addiction.
