From Cuba to Sobriety: Carl's Journey of Recovery

My motive was, you know, look at me, and it was really funny, because working as a delegate, I mean I wanted to move to New York City and work for aa and be influential and hang out in d c. And, and again, it wasn't.
Carl's story is one of incredible highs and devastating lows. Born in Cuba, he moved to Utah with his single mother and started drinking at the tender age of 10. By the time he graduated college, Carl had landed a job that seemed perfect for a functional alcoholic—researching the alcohol industry in Europe. Imagine the irony of a job that paid him to indulge in his addiction! Despite his professional success, Carl's life was spiraling out of control.
He was a highly functioning alcoholic who even became a delegate for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), but his motives were far from pure. Seeking influence and recognition, Carl eventually realized he needed to change if he wanted to survive. With the help of fellow alcoholics, Carl found the strength to get sober. Accountability and giving back to the community played crucial roles in his recovery.
Today, Carl is not just sober but also a sponsor, helping others navigate their own paths to sobriety. This episode of 'Odyssey House Journals' doesn't just stop at Carl's personal story; it also touches on the broader issue of how working from home during the pandemic has impacted addiction. The easy access to alcohol has made it harder for some to maintain sobriety, highlighting the ongoing need for support and treatment.
If you're looking for an inspiring tale of resilience and the transformative power of community support, Carl's journey offers valuable insights and hope.
