Breaking Barriers: Uniting the Recovery Community
I'm sick and tired of putting everything, putting my recovery in comparison to everybody else's, because I can find people whose recovery is way better than mine too, you know, instead of looking for the people that are kind of slouched- and I could find the people, I mean, yeah, I've gotten okay recovery. Man, you can't judge someone else's recovery journey, you can't do it, you know, because we all start at different places, you know, and you can't judge it.
Ever felt frustrated by how fragmented the recovery community can be? David and Josh sure have. In this eye-opening episode of 'Better Life in Recovery', they tackle the pressing need for organizations to work together rather than operate in silos. The duo doesn’t hold back as they share their personal frustrations and real-life examples, including a panel discussion that, despite a great response, led to no tangible change.
David stresses the importance of harm reduction and treating those with substance use disorders with unconditional positive regard. They also highlight innovative approaches like Jesse Harvey’s Church of Safe Injection in Maine, which provides sterile supplies to drug users. Throughout the episode, David and Josh address the damaging effects of stigma and shame, urging for a more compassionate and understanding approach. They argue that competition within the recovery community is counterproductive and that collaboration is key to making real progress.
This episode is a call to action for everyone involved in the recovery journey to unite, listen, and learn from one another. Tune in to hear their passionate plea for a more cohesive and supportive recovery community.
