Brady Leavold: From Hockey Dreams to Addiction and Recovery
It's my hope that I can just help one person, and then all the hell that I've gone through has been worth it. Someone's grateful that I'm in their life.
Imagine growing up with dreams of making it big in the NHL, only to find yourself battling the harsh realities of addiction and homelessness. That's the story of Brady Leavold, a former Western Hockey League (WHL) All-Star. In this episode of 'Hockey 2 Hell and Back', Brady sits down with Colin Long to share his incredible journey from the heights of junior hockey to the depths of heroin addiction and a three-year prison sentence.
Raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Brady was once on the same line as Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn. But just two years after his WHL career, he found himself addicted to heroin and living on Vancouver's downtown eastside. His addiction led him down a dark path filled with crime and violence. However, Brady's time behind bars became a turning point. He took a hard look at his life, faced his demons, and started on the path to recovery.
Today, he is the founder of The Pucksport Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to supporting mental health and addiction resources in the hockey community. Brady's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health support and the possibility of redemption. Tune in to hear Brady's candid reflections and learn how he's using his experiences to help others.
