Patients’ Priorities in Opioid Treatment: Insights from Addiction Medicine Journal Club

I was just really surprised that a lot of what I prioritize is not what the patients prioritize, and that's why this article is so interesting and important. I feel like I'm a little more powerless about that. This article definitely makes me think more about what do my patients really want and how can I help them meet those goals, and hearing that for a lot of people, maybe total abstinence from drugs is not actually a goal, even though that's what we focus on most in our clinics.
What truly matters to patients undergoing treatment for opioid use disorder? Dr. Sonya Del Tredici and Dr. John Keenan tackle this vital question in this episode of the 'Addiction Medicine Journal Club'. They dive into a fascinating study by Reed, M.K., Smith, K.R., Ciocco, F., and colleagues that evaluates what patients deem most important in their treatment journeys.
The hosts break down the qualitative research methods used, such as structured interviews and a pile sorting task, to get to the heart of patients' priorities. But that’s not all. Drs. Del Tredici and Keenan also discuss the DEA’s proposed telemedicine regulations, focusing on telemedicine prescribing of controlled substances and the induction of buprenorphine via virtual consultations.
They highlight additional articles supporting the safety of telemedicine for buprenorphine prescriptions and address concerns about diverted buprenorphine not significantly contributing to overdose deaths. Adding a layer of urgency, the hosts encourage listeners to engage with these regulatory changes by submitting public comments before the deadline. They also touch on a CNN article about patients losing access to prescribed opioids, adding a real-world perspective to the discussion.
This episode isn’t just for healthcare professionals; it’s for anyone interested in understanding how patient goals can shape more effective and compassionate treatment strategies. Tune in for an enlightening conversation that underscores the importance of prioritizing patients' needs and goals in addiction medicine.
