Maureen Cavanagh: Navigating a Family's Battle with Opiate Addiction
I want to demystify addiction and I want to talk honestly about it, and I want to make my pain make sense to me.
Imagine discovering that your child, someone you thought you knew inside and out, is struggling with heroin addiction. That’s the heart-wrenching reality Maureen Cavanagh faced in 2014 when she learned her daughter Katie was caught in the grips of substance use disorder. Despite her background as an educator and her own family's history with addiction, Maureen was blindsided by the signs. Feeling isolated and without support, she decided to become the advocate she desperately needed.
Now, Maureen is the President of Magnolia New Beginnings, a national nonprofit that offers peer support to over 25,000 members, and she also runs Magnolia Recovery and Consulting Services. In this episode of 'Steps to Sobriety', host Stephan Neff sits down with Maureen to discuss her journey from despair to empowerment. They talk about the importance of family-focused addiction training and how Maureen's experiences led her to create the NAADAC-approved Family-Focused Addiction Support Training (FAST) Program.
Maureen shares invaluable insights on recognizing the signs of drug use, the necessity of support meetings, and the transformative power of education and community in recovery. Whether you're a parent, a friend, or someone battling addiction yourself, Maureen's story offers hope and practical advice for navigating these challenging waters.
