Stefan Olsdal on Rock and Roll, Addiction, and Finding Himself

For me, coming out as a gay man with the guilt and the shame that I felt that I carried and the social stigma that I had back then and not so much now, fortunately, I liken that to the process of me coming out as an addict with mental health issues.
What happens when the rock and roll lifestyle collides with personal struggles of addiction and identity? In this episode of 'The Wagon', Finty Williams and John McKeown sit down with Stefan Olsdal, bassist and guitarist from Placebo, to uncover his journey through these very challenges. Stefan opens up about the whirlwind of excess that came with fame, where indulgence was a constant companion.
But beyond the glamour, he faced the daunting task of confronting his addiction and coming to terms with his sexuality. Stefan likens coming out as an addict to coming out as a gay man - both journeys fraught with guilt, shame, and societal judgement. Through candid reflections, he shares how a supportive community and acceptance were crucial in his path to recovery.
Stefan's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of surrounding oneself with understanding people and the courage it takes to say, 'I need help'. Tune in to hear a raw and inspiring account of resilience and transformation.
