Marques Marchand: Overcoming Addiction and Embracing Mindfulness
I fought them on it and that's why I eventually left, because they were forcing structure on me and, and good for them, that's what parents should do. But I just didn't have it and then it went into my adulthood and I just never learned these things.
Ever wondered how hitting rock bottom can turn into a story of hope and recovery? In this episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, Duane Osterlind sits down with author Marques Marchand to explore his incredible journey through addiction, dual diagnosis, and the healing power of mindfulness. Marques's story begins in 2009, when he found himself at his lowest point, grappling with flu-like symptoms and an overwhelming sense of despair.
By Thanksgiving the following year, he made the brave decision to quit everything cold turkey. But the road to recovery was far from easy. He faced immense challenges in maintaining friendships and holding down a job, leading him to seek help from therapists between 2006 and 2010. During this period, Marques discovered he was not only battling alcoholism but also bipolar disorder type II.
With the aid of medications, 12-step programs, and healthier lifestyle choices, he began to regain control over his life. What makes Marques's journey particularly inspiring is his embrace of writing as a therapeutic outlet. While working as a concierge in San Francisco, he started penning down his experiences in what would become his book, 'Junk Knowledge'. Writing allowed him to process his emotions and share his story with others who might be facing similar struggles.
This episode sheds light on the importance of seeking treatment and support, especially for those dealing with dual diagnoses. Marques's candid discussion about his ups and downs serves as a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Tune in to hear how mindfulness practices and a commitment to self-care can pave the way for a brighter future.
