Peer Power: Transforming Addiction Care with Lived Experience

It's transformative having them on the team. It's nice when they're remunerated properly and it's also nice when they have the proper support to deal with these chaos, because I don't think the medical field is comfortable or is ready to deal with the amount of death that we're seeing in this patient population and hopefully over time there'll be some kind of infrastructure to provide good support for them.
How do you make addiction treatment more effective and compassionate? Dr. Wiplove Lamba and Jean-Paul Michael believe the answer lies in peer support workers. In this episode of 'Captain Hooked: The Addiction Project', recorded at the CSAM conference, they dive into their experiences of integrating people with lived experience into clinical settings. These 15 minutes are packed with insights on the transformative role of peer support workers, from building trust with patients to enhancing treatment outcomes. Dr.
Lamba and Michael discuss the training required for peer support workers, the challenges they face, and the undeniable wins they bring to hospital-based addiction care. They also touch on the crucial role of harm reduction in treatment and how peer support workers can be pivotal in these efforts. If you're interested in the future of addiction care, this episode offers a compelling look at how lived experience can make all the difference.
