Jonathan Rea on Building Resilience in Addiction and Trauma Recovery
We are incarcerating and punishing trauma instead of healing it. And so if addiction- and of course I don't think we're going to have to go into the kind of political history of why the penal system, you know, incarcerates or has a war on drugs, but it did start like in The Late 80s, and then it informs why there's a higher rate of members of the non-dominant culture in the prison system, I think to look at addiction outside of what the criminal justice system is doing now, which is addiction, is a choice.
What happens when you combine a deep understanding of trauma with a passion for helping others? In this episode of 'A Way Through', Jamie Edwards sits down with Jonathan Rea, the Clinical Director at Malaty Therapy, to uncover the complex layers of addiction and trauma recovery. Jonathan, a seasoned psychotherapist, brings years of experience working with adolescents and adults grappling with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
He shares valuable insights into how disconnection from oneself and others can spark addiction, emphasizing the importance of developing resilience. Jonathan also explains the role of the limbic brain in triggering panic attacks and trauma responses, making the science behind these experiences accessible and understandable. The conversation takes a critical look at how the criminal justice system often exacerbates trauma and addiction, perpetuating a cycle that is hard to break.
Jonathan underscores the need for validating adolescent recovery and offering robust support through dedicated therapists. This episode is a blend of empathy, expertise, and actionable advice, making it a must-listen for anyone touched by addiction or trauma.
