Growing Up Online: Teens Share Their Social Media Struggles

It's just the smallest things that happen and I think it's just shocking, like how fast it can happen. And like, if you go post something and like, I don't want to say, someone has like a personal quota that they want to meet, but like they know what they're looking for, you know people want to be complimented and just get all these, like all this positive feedback from people or whatever, in reality, like, if you don't meet that, that could also lead to feeling really bad about yourself and then that also leads to self-esteem and depression.
Imagine navigating your formative years under the constant gaze of social media. In this episode of 'A Way Through', hosted by Archway Academy, Sasha Coles, LMFT, LPC, sits down with students Lua, Emily, and Jackson to unpack what it's really like growing up in the digital age. These teens have been diving deep into how social media shapes body image, mental health, and the never-ending cycle of online comparisons.
Their candid stories reveal both the highs and lows of living life online. Lua and Emily open up about the addictive nature of social media, discussing how it can erode self-esteem and contribute to feelings of depression. They emphasize the critical role that parents play in guiding their children through the digital maze, stressing the importance of online safety.
The conversation also touches on how social media impacts body image and self-worth, often leading to unhealthy comparisons and the relentless pursuit of online validation. Jackson adds another layer to the discussion by exploring the dangers of oversharing and the need for genuine support systems. The trio highlights how social media can be a double-edged sword: a place for comfort and connection but also a source of distress and pressure to conform.
Through their experiences, they underscore the importance of education and awareness in helping young people navigate these challenges. This episode is a must-listen for anyone concerned about the impact of social media on today's youth. It serves as a reminder that while the digital landscape can be daunting, recovery and self-discovery are possible. Tune in to hear these brave teens share their journeys and offer hope to others facing similar struggles.
